There’s one more important technique you can use to make your images appear to download faster. Those images that repeat throughout your site – like common logos, headers, or navigation bars – don’t always need to download again and again. By default, Netscape and Internet Explorer set aside a memory cache to store recently used images in RAM and on the hard disk. If a browser recognizes the same filename, it’ll pull the image straight from the cache instead of downloading it. This provides a massive performance boost that a lot of automated timing programs don’t acknowledge – just pull out a stopwatch and see for yourself.

Since the client-side cache is such a useful ally, you should design pages with the browser cache in mind. For instance, if your site uses a number of different header graphics that vary only slightly (like a standard logo with various department names underneath it), try breaking up the image so that the unchanged portion (the standard logo) is stored in the cache and always loads immediately. Though you’ll still need to load a new graphic on each page (in this case, a department name), the image is smaller and therefore downloads faster.

Finally, keep your images in one place, preferably on your own server (versus linking away to an image). This helps minimize the slight performance ding of a DNS lookup. Also, you won’t be outta luck if one or more of the servers from which you snarf your images has crashed or is bogged down.

And that’s it for the very basics of image optimization. Check back tomorrow, when we’ll show you how to get those images even smaller.

Take a look at any Web page, and you’ll find that a big hunk of the download time comes from image files.

Over the next four days, we’ll be taking a look at all the different ways to get pages down to their leanest and meanest. Today we’ll start with the most obvious culprit: images.

Web users aren’t known for their patience. Your images may be sub-zero cool, but if they’re too plump for a quick download, few people will stick around long enough to see them. Fortunately, Web designers can implement a host of tricks and optimizations to speed image, and thus page, downloads.

Bugs, kinks, slow-loading graphics, 404′s, broken links, HTML errors – any of these can be damaging to your site. Sites with numerous errors look, and feel unprofessional. If your Web site is riddled with these annoying snafus, there will definitely be a negative impact on your site’s traffic, not to mention your sales.

You should periodically test your site with a diagnostic tool. Basically, diagnostic tools troubleshoot your URL and run your site through a series of tests. The results tell you where problems lie and what needs to be fixed.

It’s a good idea to schedule a diagnostic “tune-up” on a regular basis and especially after a major site overhaul. Your web host may already provide this service as part of your hosting package so double-check with them before signing up and paying for a duplication of efforts.

A browser is software, just like a word-processing or spreadsheet program, only instead of cranking out pie charts or memos, a browser enables you to see Web pages. Mosaic was the first browser, while Netscape and Internet Explorer are the most commonly used nowadays. The advent of browsers transformed the Internet – formerly a dry, text-based thing only a government official or academician could love – into the colorful, user-friendly Web we know and use.

How it works: Browsers take text files written in HTML (which is the coding language that gussies up plain-old text with images, sound clips, and links to other Web pages) and assemble all the relevant pieces into one colorful, easy-to-digest page. Browsers can also host a variety of additional Internet fun: email, chat rooms, newsgroups, online gaming, and more.

inter alias

The time that a site may be operating at 100%, with domain and emails fully functional 4-week average, but depends on the availability of content and timely approval of the design. It also depends on additional programming, applications, e-commerce or otherwise.

Cascading Style Sheets

They are used to separate the elements of style such as a page layout, color and fonts of page content such as paragraphs and images.

If you do not understand CSS at all, then you can not use it in place. However we suggest that the benefits to be gained from using CSS, not just Google, is worth the time invested.

Why is CSS so good for Google?

The CSS allows for smaller file sizes

The CSS allows you greater control of page structure

The CSS allows you to hide certain content from browsers while still being considered by Google

The CSS allows for smaller file sizes

Taking styles HTML page and putting them on a sheet (imported) independent of the type (file. css) can reduce the total amount of code in your suttee. The pages with less code have smaller file sizes and Google prefers pages with smaller file sizes (many other search engines too).

Although Google does not offer specific advice on this matter, the community should Optimization for Search Engines that 100KB is a good upper limit for size of the page.

The CSS allows you greater control of page structure

The CSS allows you to structure your document as HTML standards without compromising “look“Page.

Google rewards pages that are structured well, although many designers choose to ignore the standards and guidelines as much as is possible, because the standards incorrectly believe lead to the ugly pages. Using CSS, designers can create attractive pages while adhering to the principles of design in CSS.

The CSS allows you to hide the contents of the browsers and still be considered by Google

Using CSS, you can hide the contents of certain browsers in certain situations. For example: you have some content you want only to appear in print, or that some content was shown only on the screen and in print (such as navigation of the page).

The advantage is that Google will continue to index the content and get the advantage that this brings.

Browser Compatibility

If you are new to CSS, learn that different browsers still interpret the CSS standard in different ways, while some very old Siqueiros read CSS. In Grafika we ensure that your site is CSS as “cross-browser compatible” as possible.
