Hooray for Hurricanes
Each year, as summer draws to a close, powerful storms are generated off the coast of western Africa that often become the hurricanes that batter the Caribbean and the Americas. Due to this destructive weather pattern, cruise lines have difficulty filling their Caribbean cruises with customers during the fall and early winter months and consequently heavily discount their cruise packages. While it may sound ludicrous to book an autumn cruise (at any price) when the chances are good that a hurricane could rock the boat, the beauty of a cruise is that the boat can go around the storm and change its itinerary. Check out these great deals on off-season cruises.
Arthur Frommer's Outspoken Encyclopedia of Travel has a great list of the best values on upcoming cruises. You also can book the cruise directly from the Frommer's site.
1Travel.com offers a free weekly e-mail update of the latest cruise bargains. Simply fill out the e-mail form with your preferences and you automatically will receive the listings each week.
The cruise operators themselves are good sources of special deals. Holland America has a page of fall specials, as does Norwegian Cruise Lines. It is definitely worth contacting the other major lines to find out about last-minute and seasonal specials.
Cruise News Daily is a terrific resource for cruise enthusiasts. Each day, CND publishes the latest news from the cruise industry, weather reports, fare specials and tons of other cruise-related info. You can receive CND via e-mail or by visiting the website.
There also are many discount travel agencies on the 'Net that specialize in reduced fare cruises. Cruise Specials has extensive listings for the hurricane season. Although Cruise For Less greets visitors to the site with an obnoxious voice that repeats "Warning, don't pay retail," it has some very good deals on cruises year round.
This fall, use the 'Net to take advantage of Mother Nature's low fare creator, hurricane season. After all, big cruise ships hardly ever sink.
