Life on the Wild Side: Women-Oriented Adventures
Trying to find a vacation oriented specifically to your gender? The Web is home to quite a few women-oriented travel outfitters that tailor their trips for relaxation, self-discovery, spiritual retreats and women's community, as well as outdoor challenges and riskier adventures. Granted, they aren't all exactly budget vacations, but hey, isn't that what a vacation is all about? Destinations Galore
Offering some of the most exotic locations for women-only travel, in addition to a well-designed and easy-to-navigate site, Rainbow Adventures has a destination for everyone. Whether you enjoy kayaking in Baja, Mexico; touring Egypt; trekking the Himalayas; hiking through Ireland; playing cowgirl in Montana; watching wildlife migration on the Tanzania Serengeti; or sailing the British Virgin Islands, many of these tours will stretch your imagination without putting a huge dent in your wallet. Many of the week-long trips I looked at cost less than $2,000, though the price tag can creep upwards of $5,000 for longer vacations. According to Rainbow, many of its travelers are between 30 and 70 years old and are repeat customers.
A well-designed, extremely humorous, hip and organized site, Wild Women Adventures offers varied trips -- from week-long New York City excursions to an exploration of lost Mayan temples. Its well-planned, "hassle-free" and generally affordable trips are worth a gander, but those aren't the best part. Lively articles, bulletin boards and a quick test to determine if you need a vacation ("You have an unrelenting urge to make dried flower arrangements!") are even more exciting than the vacation listings. The writers' sense of humor is, well, you decide: "Czech It Out: Praguematic Writing," "Erin Go Braghless" and "What's Mayan is Yours" are the clever names of some of the online tours for your perusal.
Based in Anchorage, Alaska, Women's Flyfishing is a women-only fly-fishing outfitter that offers a ton of cool trips to female anglers of all levels. Providing all the necessary gear for your trip, they fish for all species of trout, salmon, char and grayling. Its adventures run from day trips to week-long excursions, as well the popular four-day women's fly-fishing school. The last's $2,400 price tag includes round-trip airfare to Anchorage, three nights lodging, meals, four days of instruction, equipment, flies, guide, boats and guaranteed fun.
In-your-face Vagabunda urges women to "take over the world." If you are looking for information on the best time of day to visit the Taj Mahal or the nicest four-star hotel in Paris, this ChickClick member site is probably not the place for you. On the other hand, if Phallic Festivities, "Cheap Ass Travel" and a "Bad Girl's Guide to the Open Road" are your style, then start here. Exchange tips and information in the site's forums.
Passionfruit is the online incarnation of a serious women's travel journal "for women who recognize that a journey is more than a vacation; it is an opportunity to challenge our beliefs and expand our minds." Articles you can expect to see in Passionfruit include "Guilt-Free Travel?," "Postcards from Corfu" and "Trailblazers: Early Women Travelers." Subscriptions to the paper journal cost $18 for four quarterly issues.
While it isn't specifically targeted at women, Salon's Travel and Food section will appeal to anyone with wanderlust and a taste for exotic cuisine. Especially worthwhile is the column written by a flight attendant. Elliot Neal Hester recounts the strangest moments he has had in 14 years on the job.
While these sites differ in their approaches to vacations and prices, they all hold some common values: small groups make for better travel; getting away from home, work and family is healthy; meeting other people is fun; and self-discovery in distant places with like-minded individuals is vital to good mental health.
