Hey, you! What are you doing? Where are you going? More importantly, what are you clicking on?

Ah, if only it were that easy. But no, most users like to travel the Web incognito. They come to your site, poke around a few files, download a PDF or two, and then — poof — disappear, leaving nothing but questions in their wake: Where did they come from? Which browsers are they using? Are they experiencing any errors?

Short of asking outright, there are ways to find the answers to these questions. The most celebrated method of tracking users is by planting cookies, which some folks consider rude or invasive, and, oh yeah, you need to know how to program them. Not to worry — there is an option that requires very little technical know-how, comes at no (or nominal) cost, and may already be a part of your site’s backend. I’m talking about logs! No, not those fancy browser-based publishing automation systems with a cult-like following. I speak of log files.

Almost every Web server worth its salt has some sort of system that stores information about which pages, images, and files are requested, who requests them, and how many bytes are transferred. All of this information is dumped into a log file that is stored in a specific location on your server.

These log files are yours to explore. You can simply open the log file in an ordinary text editor and read the raw data. Or, for a more user-friendly view of the info, suck the log file into a nifty stand-alone software package or browser-based viewer, which parse the data and spit it out as a charts or graphs or tables that clearly illustrate your users’ activities.

Not sure why this information is valuable? Well, if you’ve invested time and money in a website, one of your biggest points of interest is indubitably traffic — whether people are exposed to advertisements or your products, traffic is directly proportional to revenue. But there’s more to traffic than just eyes on pages. Sure, the numbers you get from your log files will tell you how many people visited your site in any given space of time, but traffic data can also be studied to give you a clear, precise idea of what kinds of viewing practices your users exhibit.

Let’s say a user comes to your site and views a few pages. In server-speak, user actions are counted in requests. Any time the user is served an image, an HTML file, or an ad, it counts as a request. If 17 HTTP requests are served in one session, how many of those 17 requests are images? How many are ads? How many turned up as (eek!) 404 “address failed” errors? These are the types of questions that can be answered by picking over your log files and generating in-depth reports.

The trick is to learn as much as possible about what is being served to your users. Vitals like location, browser version, and time spent on your site allow you to tailor your content and presentation design specifically to please the users that you’re doing business with.

Q: What is a domain name?

A domain name, also known as a Web address, is a name used to identify and locate your Web site. By registering your own domain, you have the opportunity to pick a short, easy to remember address that matches your site. And because each domain name is unique, you can keep your domain name no matter what service you use for hosting your site.

Q:Why should I register a domain name?

Registering a domain name gives you the opportunity to choose a short, easy to remember Web address that matches your website. And because the address is not tied to a particular ISP or website hosting service, your URL will always stay the same.

Q: Can I register a domain name if I don’t have website?

Yes! Domain Parking reserves your domain name for a future website. If someone tries to access your domain, a “coming soon” page will be displayed. This is the default setting for newly registered domains. You can leave your domain parked for as long as you like. Once you do have a website, it’s easy to make the switch.

Q: How do I connect my domain name to a website?

Simply choose the Domain Forwarding option after you register your domain name. By doing so, your domain traffic will be automatically forwarded to any website address you designate. If you also enable Domain Masking, your domain name will appear in the browser’s location/address bar instead of the destination site address.

Q: How long before my newly-registered domain name is available on the Internet?

Domain names may take up to 72 hours before they are acccessible. This waiting period is standard for new domain registration.

Q: Is an e-mail account included with my domain name?

E-mail accounts are separate from domain registration. To sign up for an e-mail account, visit Lycos Mail. Once you have an e-mail address, you can use the e-mail forwarding option to forward your domain e-mail. For example, if your domain is mydomain.com, all e-mail ending in @mydomain.com can be forwarded to any other e-mail address.

Q: How can I receive e-mail at my domain?

If you already have an e-mail address, E-Mail Forwarding is the answer. Just tell us what address you want your domain e-mail to go to, and we’ll take care of the rest. For example, if your domain name is mydomain.com, all e-mail ending in @mydomain.com can be automatically forwarded to any e-mail address you designate.

Q: Where can I build and host my website?

You’re in luck. Lycos offers the Web’s best site building and hosting services. Angelfire makes building fun by adding extras like movies, music, and more. Tripod wins awards with its builder-friendly tips and tools. We recommend that you check out both sites!

Q: Are there any rules for choosing a domain name?

Yes, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

Use only letters, numbers, or a hyphen (“-”)

Do not begin or end the name with a hyphen

Domain names ending in .com, .net, .org. and .info must have less then 63 characters*, not including the 3 or 4-letter extension.

Domain name cannot have spaces.

♣ Most browsers support .com, .net. and .org domain names exceeding 26 characters. However, certain web browsers, email programs and other Internet related applications may not support domain names over 26 characters.

Q: Can I reserve a .org or .net domain name?

Yes, you’re free to use any of the extensions offered by Lycos Domains. Restricted extensions such as .gov and .edu are not available.

But those earlier, more concerned to know in detail the options available in the market.

Be careful with marketing companies to contact you by SPAM

For example you may have read emails with sentences like:

“I Have Developed a Software That Automatically Place your ad on millions of sites. You will Receive Thousands of targeted hits to your website That match your ad’s category”…

“Would you like help with your web site? We would like to do a free review of your online business to show how you Could we help you get more targeted web traffic”…

“We found your site and we liked it, But It Could Be looks like you getting a lot more visibility and traffic on the search engines if your site Was Easier to locate”…

“For no cost to you we will analyze your site and your web placement and show you how to Higher listing with specific key words would greatly benefit your online results”… Etc, etc, etc.

No one can guarantee be among the top positions in Google, for example. The only way in which one can properly include a website is usually through a form.

Beware of those who do not clearly explain their techniques as they propose to do

Note that it is more likely to achieve the disappearance of a website in a form having charged for fraudulent services.

Consult on high Automatic (submission) in thousands of search engines

The automatic submission NOT guarantee positioning. This popular technique known since the early Internet, do not influence the ranking of search engine only appear on other search engines, which also are not known. In fact, the only result of this practice is to make spam to your mail.

Be cautious when buying tools which require to install additional software

In such cases it is better not to trust them. Be skeptical and preferably ask for the number of users currently using these tools, in addition to consulting practices on the Internet.

Choose wisely

Research your career, jobs, other customers who trust them, ask, ask, ask …

See clearly where the money is directed investing

While Google does not sell better positions, some companies if they sell increase in traffic through certain knowledge and work allegedly performed. Usually this was achieved by inserting links on other sites and combining techniques such as “pay-per-click” or “pay-for-inclusion.”

Check with other companies and actions to be undertaken

References are always going to be a good start. Check with other companies and if it finds that have tried to cheat, even Google you can help by telling your form www.google.com / contact / spamreport.html.

Make sure you’re protected legally.

could have been invented to keep dictionary makers in business. Not only do
these two words differ by only a letter, but, adding to the confusion, they are
often used in contexts where either word might fit. For example, a flooded

First of all, let me dispel the myth that a website can gain huge success and continue to remain productive simply by using an ‘auto-pilot’ program.
You know what an ‘auto-pilot’ program is, right? You see them splashed all over the web. Basically, they’re website marketing schemes designed to provide a constant flow of targeted traffic to your website simply by picking a general category, paying some money and away you go.

The problem is, more often then not, ‘auto-pilot’ programs are only designed to sell ‘auto-pilot’ programs. This isn’t to say that that some of the ideas being offered by these programs don’t have any value. Every idea, tried and true or unconventional, has a place in your marketing plan and the most important part of a marketing plan is to actually have one. Website Traffic Needs A Driver If you want your website to be successful, you need to take control of the marketing – you need to be the ‘driver’ of your website traffic marketing machine. There are many different roads you can take with your marketing machine and each of them needs to be understood and explored. One isn’t better than the other but rather they have to all work together if you want to draw some serious traffic to your website. Simply throwing money at the problem isn’t the answer.

A wildly successful marketing plan doesn’t have to cost much money – if any money at all. Consider this: Big name companies often throw thousands and thousands of unfocused dollars into their ‘generic looking template’ websites and get far less traffic than the little guys that have no advertising budget but have great marketing plans. Something as simple as signing your emails with your name, a short teaser for your website and your website URL could easily bring you some traffic. Combine this with other simple but effective website promotion ideas and your ‘marketing machine’ will really start to roll. How about this one: Create an email with a joke that relates to the theme of your website but ‘leave out the punch line’. Next, create a page on your website with the punch line of the joke. Put a link in your email to the page on your website with the punch line of the joke and say something like: “Please forward this email to your friends – it will make their day! This joke is so funny they’ll be crying with laughter! .” Now, send this email to everyone you can think of. Congratulations! You’ve just created a viral email (not spam) Your friends will forward your email to their friends. Their friends will forward your email to their friends and so on.

That simple email could bring your website a ton of traffic very quickly. The scope of this article isn’t to go into the details of the various ways to drive traffic to your website (we’ll save them for other articles) but rather to get you to understand that you are the ‘driver’ of your marketing machine and it’s up to you to steer it in the right direction. Keep your eyes and ears open

In this article, we will review a few suggested guidelines for submitting your business website to search engines and directories. The first ecommendation is that you do not submit your website to any search engine or directory until it is optimized for keywords and content. Both play an important role in where your website will be ranked. After all, if you do not have a high ranking, you might as well not be listed at all. A great tool for achieving this is through the use the IBP (Internet Business Promoter) tool. This tool is exceptional for helping you optimize your website and they do offer a free trial.
Make sure that you have plenty of one-way incoming links. You can achieve this best by submitting articles to websites such as www.goarticles.com and www.articlecity.com. Also, submit your website to Directories like Yahoo and DMOZ. Be aware that Yahoo is a bit costly and getting listed in DMOZ can take several months or more, but there are also plenty of free directories out there to submit to. Content, content, content! Make sure you have plenty of relevant content, and update it regularly (daily if possible). Search engines love new content.

Consider adding a forum to your website or creating a blog. Blogs add one-way inbound links to your site and create returning customers. Also create reciprocal links. Lots of them. but be sure they are relevant and don’t use link farms! It is best if you review your reciprocal links personally and determine yourself if the reciprocating website is relevant to your business. DO NOT SUBMIT TO GOOGLE. Let them find you through other established links. If you do the link work yourself, Google will eventually find you. They like it better that way. Be patient! Good rankings do not come overnight. Once you submit, sit back and wait. Do not keep submitting your site, as many search engines and directories will penalize you for this as they make look at it as spamming. Follow the above basic guidelines and it will help you achieve better ratings.
