“They Killed Kenny!” — Searching Through South Park Sites
Some people just can't wait until June 30, when the South Park movie hits the theaters. The show has been quite a success story. Few TV shows have had a stranger -- or more unexpected -- rise to prominence than South Park. The crudely drawn, profane but-hilarious series began when a Fox executive paid two struggling animators $2,000 to make a video greeting card. Now it’s the most successful debut in the history of Comedy Central. Much of its popularity is because of the Internet; there are dozens of South Park sites on the Web, from ones that detail each character obsessively to sites that offer complete downloads of the episodes. Here’s a guide to the best of them.
A great place to start is with the Official Comedy Central Site. You’ll find audio and video downloads, a chat room, an interview with the creators and a variety of South Park merchandise for sale. There’s also a great collection of Java word and puzzle games, including an interactive (and very funny) poll.
In addition, the site offers a collection of easy-to-use, animated images called Things, which you can download for free and use for your own website. You'll need a plug-in called ThingViewer to view them, though.
Almost as comprehensive is Mr. Hat’s Hell Hole, which features a collection of what the author believes the oft-unlucky character Kenny actually is saying underneath his hood.
Also worth checking out is Adequate.com’s South Park. It’s notable mostly for its collection of Frequently Asked Questions, which provides a wealth of information on the show’s background and history.
If you're in need of a quick video fix before June 30, download the 1995 short that started it all at The Spirit of Christmas: Official Distribution Site.
